The outcome at Chancellorsville is truly a blow to the cause of the Union. The loss of 17000 men is no small number. Though I believe General Hooker to be a great commander and capable leader, he was against two of the best commanders of the Confederate army.
After passing through Chancellorsville, I found it difficult not to laugh at the fortifications that had been constructed. My men and I had faced worse during our campaigns in the west. I must admit that seeing these "fortifications" has made me forget my anger with Halleck.
The only good thing to come out of that battle was that the Confederates lost one of their best commanders. Jackson proved to be a great thorn in the side of the Union army. The fact that he was shot by his own men comes to be surprise but something that would prove to be beneficial to our cause.

I am flattered that you consider me to be one of the best confederate generals, but I feel the need to warn you that despite Jackson's demise we will continue our campaign.
ReplyDeleteSherman,
ReplyDeleteStonewall's death has indeed benefited the Union. Don't be surprised of his death, Sherman. Rebels and criminals are not meant to work together. Put into the same room, one is bound to get shot, whether they are fighting the same battle or not. That's the difference between the Union and the Confederacy, my dear friend. The Union stands together while the South continues to disintegrate. Davis truly cannot control the South.
~Honest Abe
I disagree Lincoln, the South can fight wihtout harming their own. The death of Jackson by another Confederate was but a mere accident.

The loss of Jackson is certainly encouraging news for the Union, and we need it after such a huge loss at this battle.
ReplyDeleteThe death of our beloved Lieutenant General will not stop or hinder us. This will only unite us as a country to complete the cause for which Jackson died.
ReplyDeleteThe day when the Confederacy truly "unites" will be very unlikely. Until then or the Union prevails, like it should, then small accidents like Jackson will help boost morale. If the Confederacy has such skilled Lieutenant Generals over so many oafs, then the Union will win for lack of people to fight.
ReplyDeleteGeneral Sherman,
ReplyDeleteI admire your optomism towards this battle and I hope that it as well as your resolve does not fade in lieu of our recent losses. We shall overcome the confederates General Sherman and we shall not stop until every Confederate has been removed from this continent!
