The news of Fort Sumter has finally reached Lancaster, Ohio. I fear the worst has come to pass. War is now upon us and now choices must be made, families will be split, and blood shall be shed. The question of my loyalty has already been answered by the choices I have made in the past. I will continue to support the Union. I will once again offer my services to the military of the United States of America.
The survival of this country now teeters on the edge of a blade. One side lies the shattering of a once singular nation; on the other is the oblivion of both the South and the North. Without unity, neither the North nor the South will survive in the foreseeable future.
The blame lay not with President Lincoln and the North but with the unchanging ways of the South. The North cordially stated that supplies would be delivered to Fort Sumter to prevent our troops from starving. Instead, they refuse our request and fire upon a Union fort! It is they who have beat on the drums of war and it is they who have rent this nation asunder. It our duty as Union men to support the Union in times such as these!

Although peace would be the main goal from this ordeal, I can't help but disagree with you on blaming the south. My administration has asked multiple times for the Union to evacuate Fort Sumter since it is a direct threat to our security if war is declared. On top of asking for the evacuation, I also appointed a peace commission to resolve our differences. I must say that if anything, our siege on Fort Sumter could have been avoided if the Union had respected our wishes.
ReplyDeleteDo not listen to Jefferson Davis, Mr. Sherman. The Union did nothing wrong with waiting. At least the Union knows that they have the patience to withstand the need for blood and protect their own. The Confederate army knew what they were doing and will regret it always whenever they have to go to war with the Union. May the blue stand strong!
ReplyDeleteMr. Sherman, I wholeheartedly agree with you. We have done nothing wrong in attempting to make sure that our soldiers have sufficient provisions. The states that have seceded, on the other hand, were unreasonable in asking that we evacuate Fort Sumter. It will be remembered that they began the violence, not us.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, the South continues to act as an impetuous child with an undeniable passion. The Union must counter with equal fervor to win this war, however. The North must keep in mind what it is fighting for, equality and unity, and do absolutely everything in its power to defend these truths. If this is attained and maintained, the United States will soon be once more.
ReplyDeleteYou can not full heartedly blame the South for what has happened. If Gov. Bohan had stepped in this could have been avoided, but he chose not to interfer, therefore the plans made by Genereal Beaurgard were carried out and thus the firing on Fort Sumter began. So do not just blame the South, other bodies contributed to the attack on Fort Sumter.
